Macular Degeneration
Medicine is founded on the principle of prevention. All patients at risk for advanced macular degeneration are recommended biannual examinations with imaging.
Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy
If you have diabetes or high sugars, regular examinations are critical to preventing and treating complications of this potentially blinding disease.
Retinal Tears and Detachments
Tears in the retina can lead to detachments that can cause vision loss. Preventive laser treatment can help you avoid surgery. However, surgical interventions are are necessary once the retina has detached.
Retinal Vascular Disease (including Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion and Central Retinal Vein Occlusion)
Retinal vein occlusions (eye strokes) are usually caused by hypertension, also called high blood pressure. Diabetes is another risk factor, as is very high eye pressure or glaucoma. We help to diagnose and treat the damage these strokes cause, and work with your primary care doctor to prevent further strokes in the eye and in the rest of your body.
Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
Usually a self-limited disease, occasionally this swelling of the macula causes more chronic visual changes that require intervention.
Macular Edema
We use a step-wise approach in an attempt to be minimally invasive. Some patients simply need eyedrops to treat their macular edema, while others may require laser treatments or injections of medication.
Flashes and Floaters
It can be very scary to have symptoms such as floaters and flashes, as these can herald a retinal tear or detachment. We are here to reassure you if all is well, and to diagnose and treat any tears or detachments we find.
Intravitreal (Eye) Injection Treatments
Injection treatments are sometimes necessary to ensure optimal vision with diseases such as "wet" or exudative macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and with retinal vein occlusions. We ensure a relaxing and pleasant experience using excellent anesthesia techniques for maximum comfort.
Laser Treatments
Laser is used to prevent the progression of many retinal diseases, from retinal tears to diabetic retinal disease. We use minimal laser power to be efficient in maintaining and optimizing your retina.
Surgery including Vitrectomy and Scleral Buckle
Sometimes there is no alternative to surgery. We work together with you to plan for an appropriate surgical procedure and date that works with your schedule.
Macular Holes
The center of the macula can develop a hole and cause loss of central vision. Treatment can being with eyedrops, but surgical intervention is often necessary.
Epiretinal Membranes
Scar tissue on the macula may distort your central vision. This has many names, including epiretinal membrane, or cellophane maculopathy. We can often monitor these until it begins to affect your reading or vision.
